المنفتحون يميلون بالفطرة للانخراط في أشكال التفاعلات الاجتماعية التي تبني الصلة مع الآخرين. في الظروف العادية تعطيهم تلك التفاعلات ميزة عندما يتعلق الأمر بالنجاح في المدرسة أو أية وظيفة أخرى، لكن في وقت الأزمات مثل أزمة جائحة كورونا الحالية حيث يُطلب من الناس البقاء بمنازلهم فإن الانطوائيين يكونون أصحاب اليد الطولى.

ليس معلوما بالضبط كيف يساعد نمط التفاعل الانفتاحيين في تقوية تفاعلهم الاجتماعي لكن البحوث تشير إلى “المحاكاة”، وهي عملية غير واعية في تقليد أنماط الحديث، ولغة الجسد وحركات الآخرين. المحاكاة معروفة أنها لبناء وتحفيز التفاعل الاجتماعي باختيار المشاعر الإيجابية لسلوك الشخص المقابل.

المنفتحون خلال فترات الإجبار أو التشجيع على الانعزال الاجتماعي أقل حظا لأن يكون لديهم ميزة اجتماعية. وُجِدَ أن وسائل التواصل البديلة مثل البريد الإلكتروني ومكالمات الفيديو تحد من فرص المحاكاة مقارنة بالتفاعل في الحياة الواقعية. التواصل عبر مكالمات الفيديو والبريد الإلكتروني مقيد، بالإضافة إلى أنها تسمح للمحاكاة مع نمط الحديث أو اللغة، لكن مع غياب المحاكاة مع لغة الجسد والحركات وإبعاد التفاعل الجسدي مثل المصافحة واللمس. اجتماعات الفيديو أيضا تقلل من فرص محاكاة سلوكيات الآخرين.

بحكم أن الظروف المهيأة للمحاكاة مقيدة بشدة طالما أننا مجبرون على استخدام الوسائل البديلة للتفاعل الاجتماعي فإن المنفتحين هم أقل جنيا للفائدة من وراء مهاراتهم في محاكاة الآخرين. لا يقتصر الأمر على أن المنفتحين محرومون من متعتهم المعتادة، لكنهم أيضا غير محصنين من التعرض للآثار العكسية من الانعزال الاجتماعي. في الظروف العادية تفضيل المنفتحين للانهماك في التفاعل الاجتماعي وحاجتهم العالية للمحفز الاجتماعي يجعلهم أكثر ميلا للبحث عن الفرص للتفاعل الاجتماعي، الذي يجنبهم الشعور بالملل والوحدة.

لكن عندما تحجب القيود محاولات التفاعل مع الآخرين فإن الانفتاحيين يصبحون أكثر عرضة للآثار السيئة للعزلة على صحتهم الجسدية والذهنية، مثل التوتر والوحدة والاكتئاب ومرض القلب والسكتة الدماغية والموت المبكر. عندما يكون المنفتحون مستبعدين عن الشعور بالحيوية اجتماعيا ويصبحون أقل حيوية خلال الفترات المديدة من العزلة فإنهم لا يتحملون الانعزال الاجتماعي كما يتحمله الانطوائيون، مما يجعلهم تحديدا معرضين للآثار السلبية لكونهم معزولين.

المرونة العالية للانطوائيين خلال فترات العزل الاجتماعي يحولنا لحقيقة مفادها أنهم يملكون تفضيلا قويا لقضاء فترات طويلة من الوقت مع أنفسهم في مساحات منعزلة، يمارسون نشاطات لا تقتضي مشاركة الآخرين فيها، مثل: القراءة والكتابة وحل الكلمات المتقاطعة، ولعب ألعاب الفيديو وأعمال الحدائق والطبخ. عندما يجبرون على البقاء بالمنازل فإنهم يقومون بما اعتادوا القيام به بشكل أفضل. في الحقيقة، إنهم بالغالب يتنفسون الصعداء؛ لأنهم لا يحتاجون للتظاهر أنهم منفتحون كي ينجحوا.

المنفتحون في المقابل لديهم حاجة ملحة للتنشيط الاجتماعي. هم يسعون بشدة للمساحات المفتوحة والبيئة الجديدة والمسلية من حولهم، ولذا فإنهم عندما يجبرون على عزل أنفسهم فإنهم يُمنعون من الانهماك في الأنشطة الاجتماعية، التي تمثل لهم الماء والغذاء. عدم قدرتهم على مواصلة نشاطاتهم الاجتماعية التي تجعلهم مبتهجين يجعلهم سريعي التأثر للآثار العكسية من العزلة غير المرغوب فيها، على صحتهم العقلية والجسدية.
